How I’m Keeping My Reading Fun in 2025

We’re only a few weeks into 2025, and I’ve got to say, it’s already shaping up to be an amazing reading year. So far, I’ve flown through 11 books, and guess what? I’ve loved every single one. Like, no duds, no "meh, it was okay" moments—just pure bookish bliss. I’m honestly buzzing about it. Let me tell you all about what I’ve been reading and why mixing up genres has been the best decision ever.
Here’s the genre breakdown of my 2025 reading list so far:
5 Romance: Okay, you know I’m absolutely obsessed with a good romance. This year, I’ve been diving headfirst into everything from cute, fluffy contemporary love stories to those deliciously dramatic age-gap romances (you know how much I love those). There’s just something about rooting for two characters to figure it all out and get their happily-ever-after that never gets old. One of these books had me full-on sobbing into my tea at 2 a.m., and honestly, isn’t that the dream? Romance is my comfort zone, my warm blanket, my happy place—and I’m not even sorry about it.
3 Thrillers: When I need a break from all the swoony love stories, thrillers are where it’s at. These books have been absolutely bonkers in the best way—twists I didn’t see coming, shady characters you can’t trust, and endings that left me staring at the wall like, "What just happened?!" One of them had such a jaw-dropping twist I actually had to put the book down and pace around my flat for a bit. Thrillers are like the perfect palate cleanser for my brain after all the romance—a little dose of chaos to keep things interesting.
2 Literary Fiction: Okay, so literary fiction feels a bit like eating your veggies, but hear me out—it’s so worth it. The two I’ve read this year were absolutely stunning. You know those books that are so beautifully written you just want to highlight every other sentence? Yeah, that’s what I’m talking about. These stories made me slow down and really savour the experience. They’re the kind of books that make you think about life in a deeper way, but without feeling like homework (thankfully!). Plus, they make me feel like a proper grown-up reader, which is always a bonus.
1 Classic: Every now and then, I like to throw a classic into the mix. This year’s pick was such a vibe. Sure, the old-timey language takes a minute to get used to, but once I’m in the groove, I’m all in. This one had so much drama and intensity—honestly, classics can be just as juicy as modern books. It’s always fun to see why these stories have stuck around for so long, and it’s kind of cool to feel connected to readers from decades (or even centuries!) ago. Plus, it’s nice to remind myself that I can handle a bit of fancy literature every now and then.
Here’s the thing: I love variety. As much as I adore romance, reading only one genre can start to feel a bit samey after a while. Mixing it up keeps things fresh and exciting. Thrillers give me that adrenaline rush, literary fiction makes me feel all deep and introspective, and classics remind me of how timeless a good story can be. It’s like having a little book buffet—there’s always something different to try, and I’m never bored. Plus, switching genres keeps my brain on its toes, which I’m convinced is why I’ve been loving everything I’ve picked up so far.
I’m so excited to see what the rest of 2025 has in store for my reading life. If the first 11 books are anything to go by, it’s going to be an unforgettable year. How’s your reading year going so far? Have you stumbled on any new favourites? Are you a genre-hopper like me, or do you stick to one lane?
